The station reopens in the cold, tightened the way buildings tighten after the thing they were designed to prevent has happened anyway. A kidnapping. A rescue. And underneath both, a harder question that will not close: someone inside the building made it possible.

The counterintelligence review begins the way these things begin — methodical, procedural, polite. It produces nothing. Weeks of conventional analysis hit a wall, because whoever is hiding inside the institution understands exactly how institutions look for people like them.

So the service turns to the one analyst who does not look the way institutions look. Lissa Chang, newly cleared, newly consequential, invents an instrument no one has thought to build — a way of reading not what people access, but the shape of how they move. It works. It works better than anyone is prepared for. And an instrument that can find a person who is hiding does not care who taught the person holding it to see.

Daniel, meanwhile, is asked to do the thing he does best — read people — inside the one review where every answer costs him something. Because the file at the centre of the investigation keeps growing, and some of its pages concern the person he trusts most. He knows the questions are weaponised. He chooses not to examine whether they are also real.

The Blind Spot is a novel about what we decide not to look at: the trust that is also a choice, the marriage of two people fluent in silence, and an old man in a stone house who learned — from a wife whose work he was never told — that the warning matters more than the secret.
